SP5595ish - Get In The Net

Every chance I'll add something later today, though I have got some work stuff to do so I'm updating now while I've got a chance. A few bits from the week, but a walk around yesterday with my net yielded loads of new stuff. Orange-tip flying around the garden this morning at last, and Lesser Whitethroat yesterday quite a bit later than usual (but not as late as the still-missing Chiffchaff!).

I was pleased with a couple more British tick hoverflies - again probably overlooked in the past.

Cheilosia pagana - look at the orange antennal blobs on that!

Platycheirus albimanus - facial knobs ....

Also some smart small weevils ...

Anthonomus pedicularius

Protapion fulvipes

Perapion violaceum

A couple of bugs ...

Stenodema laevigata

Physatocheila dumetorum

And beetles ....

Biphyllus lunatus

Oulema rufocyanea/melanopus

Sadly the last one is another aggregate - don't think the two can be separated on external characters.

  1. Hi Skev

I was interested in your photos of hoverflies. I'm a part-time PhD student at Swansea University, looking at hoverflies as pollinators. Maybe we could chat about your photos at some point, as they seem to show hoverflies carrying pollen.

Could you drop me an email at 599841@swansea.ac.uk

  2. Hi Andrew,

I'm absolutely sure that hoverflies act as pollinators and will inadvertently carry pollen (see the Eristalis pertinax on this link for example: http://skevsblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/garden-bees-and-bee-alikes.html) but other than photographing and trying to ID them I've got no greater insight than that - I'm very much an amateur naturalist rather than a professional ecologist.
